Some fine single malts:

So What's deal with Single Malts and Blended Malts?

Well, I toured the malt trail in Scotland and I and my best friend did a wee bit o' samplin of these fine fluids. I guess it all came down to the fact that they all get the malt from the same sources. The process is the same, but what makes them unique is two things: the source Water and the kind of casks they store, or Age, the whiskey in. There are three Scotch producing areas in Scotland: Speyside in the Northeast, the Isle of Islay off the west coast and the Orkneys. Other ares do have distilleries, like Talisker on Skye, or Oban on the west mainland, and the Ilse of Arran is now producing a fine scotch. Largely though....Speyside has the largest number of distilleries. When we "Pub'd" around Scotland we found that most Pubs served Macallan in shots unless another was specified. They considered it to be very smooth and was well liked by the majority...though none would say it was "the best". No, that seems to be a matter of taste. Yes, you have to try lots of Scotch (clever aren't them Scots)and you also have to try different amounts of water in the Scotch. Some, like "Fiona" of "The Whiskey Shop" in Dufftown start with a drop or two and go up from there. So you see, it's to your taste. And that's the beauty/science of Single Malts, you have to experiment untill you find that perfect elixer for YOU. Now BLENDS are made from Single Malts...some over 80 times blended. It was a surprize for us to learn that Chivas owns Glenlivit,Glenfiddich,Grant,Glendronnoch...and many more. And who owns Chivas...Seagrams. So wheather you prefer Single Malts, or Blended Malts.....CHEERS.
